Cromer v Horsford (a)

24th May 2009

Carter Cup

The Carter Cup draw once again threw Cromer up against EAPL opposition. Their second round tie saw them make a trip to face Horsford but after seeing off Fakenham in the previous round there was no reason why the North Norfolk side couldn’t cause another upset.

Captain Tom Davies won the toss and decided that his side would bat first. The Horsford opening bowlers Gilliatt and Caswell bowled very tight from the outset and Wild and Findlay did the same when they came on. Chances to get runs were limited and from the first 20 overs Cromer were on just 20 and had lost three wickets.

There was some resistance from the partnership of Charlwood and Davies with a stand of 42. Charlwood then shared a 52 run partnership with Dean Elliott. During this stand Charlwood got his half century.

Elliott was dismissed by Findlay for 14 and Cromer were 115 for 5 with 19 overs left. Five overs later Charlwood was out after hitting an excellent 68 and the end of the Cromer innings was close and they were all out for 140.

Gilliatt and Wild both took two wickets each and Chris Brown finished with figures of 4 for 14.

Cromer’s bowling needed to be spot on from the first ball and to have a chance of victory they were going to have to bowl Horsford out. Nathan Perry-Warnes got the hosts off to a quick start and kept the rate above 3 runs an over.

Cromer made a couple of breakthroughs and Horsford were 44 for 2. Perry-Warnes continued to add to his and Horsford’s total. James Wild was now scoring freely at the other end. The Alliance side finally got Perry-Warnes for 42, caught and bowled Turner.

Just one more wicket was to fall and the EAPL side reached their target in the 36th over.

Australian James Wild finished not out on 53 as his side secured a six wicket win.
