Cromer v North Runcton (H)

14th June 2009

Norfolk Association of Officials Invitation Cup

This Sunday saw the first round of the Officials Cup Competition at the Norton Warnes ground with North Runcton the opposition.

This was the second attempt to complete the fixture after last weeks game falling victim to the rain.

Captain Tom Davies elected to bat first after winning the toss. Richard Charlwood fell for 1 in the first over but then Davies and Turner added some quick runs. Both men went after the Runcton opening bowlers and

scored regular boundaries.

Mikey and Dingle - 95-run partnership

Tom Davies reached his fifty from just 43 balls. Their stand came to an end on 24 overs. They added 136 between them.

David Turner was dismissed by Hemeter for 51; this was Turner’s second half century of the weekend.

Davies was still piling on the runs but was dismissed in the 33rd over for a brilliant 87 which included 15 fours. Two more wickets soon followed and with 14 overs remaining Cromer were 178 for 6.

The young pairing of Michael Warnes and Kristian Regis were together and they both stayed until the end of the innings. Warnes played some excellent strokes and made his 50 off 40 balls. He would finish not out on 64 from 49 deliveries. His innings included 7 fours and 2 sixes. At the other end, match sponsor, Regis played a more patient innings taking just ones and twos. He finished 23 not out. Their seventh wicket partnership of 95 helped Cromer post an excellent score of 273 from 50 overs.

Warnes’ and Regis’ partnership fell just five runs short of the clubs record 7th wicket stand.

The pick of the Runcton bowlers was Cubitt who got 2 wickets for 50.

Needing over five runs per over Runcton made a good start to their reply. Despite losing Hastings early they moved to 83 to 2 from 16 overs. Barrett was the man doing the damage as he quickly reached his 50 with some big hitting.

As long as he was at the crease Runcton had a chance at keeping up with the rate. But he was out for 75 off the bowling of Dean Elliott in the 26th over.

Wickets started to fall at regular intervals and victory was getting closer for the hosts. Towards the head of the visitors innings Colin Brown was the man doing the business with the ball picking up for wickets in the last three overs of his spell. The Cromer vice skipper finished with the brilliant figures of 4 for 40 from his ten overs.

The final Runcton wicket fell in the 38th over as they were all out for 194, 80 runs short of their target.

Charlwood and Elliott also picked up two wickets each. Many thanks to Foxy Dingle for sponsoring the game.
